The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has recently updated the Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) by adding bis(α,α-dimethylbenzyl) peroxide. This addition is significant for industries utilizing this chemical, which is toxic for reproduction, and is commonly used as a flame retardant.

Key Details:

  • Chemical: bis(α,α-dimethylbenzyl) peroxide
  • Reason for Inclusion: Toxic for reproduction
  • Common Use: Flame retardant

With this update, the SVHC Candidate List now contains 241 entries. This expansion highlights the ongoing efforts to regulate and manage hazardous chemicals within the EU.

Implications for Companies:

Businesses dealing with bis(α,α-dimethylbenzyl) peroxide must take immediate action to manage the associated risks. It’s crucial for companies to provide comprehensive safety information to customers. If a product contains SVHCs in concentrations above 0.1%, suppliers are obligated to inform customers about safe usage practices and update safety data sheets accordingly.

Ensuring compliance not only protects public health and the environment but also aligns with regulatory requirements, thereby minimizing legal and financial risks.
